Built for both halves of the suburb

Every window answers to a different Claremont

A freestanding house on the upper slopes gets its light broken up by mature street trees for most of the day — pleasant, and still hard enough on a west-facing lounge come late afternoon. An apartment or townhouse nearer Main Road gets no such filter, and nobody home to draw a corded blind before the sun swings round. Two different briefs, measured and quoted on the same visit.

Finished for older joinery

Fitted to the window you have, not the one a standard bracket wants

A lot of Upper Claremont's sash windows still have their original timber reveals, and a heavy-handed bracket can chip a hundred-year-old frame before the blind's even hung. We template on site, use slim face-fixed or reveal-mounted brackets depending on what the joinery can take, and fit chain and cord tensioners as standard on anything corded. Where a body corporate or a hard-to-reach opening near Main Road rules a chain out, motorisation is quoted alongside the manual option, not sold as the only answer.

Why Claremont is specified differently

Cavendish Square's shopping mile, and the quiet oak streets rising behind it

Claremont splits cleanly at the railway line. Toward the mountain, Upper Claremont still runs on the pattern laid down before Cavendish Square opened in 1972 — Victorian and Edwardian villas and mid-century houses set back behind low garden walls on quiet, tree-lined avenues, many within walking distance of the Norfolk pines planted at Arderne's gardens in 1845. Flatter and closer to the M5, Lower Claremont is a different suburb: townhouses, semis and low- to mid-rise apartment blocks packed in around the commercial spine running past the Civic Centre and Stadium on Main toward Palmyra Junction.

The two halves need different windows solved. A freestanding house on the upper slopes gets its light broken up by mature street trees for most of the day — dappled, pleasant, and still hard enough on a west-facing lounge to need real glare control. An apartment or townhouse nearer Main Road gets no such filter: full-height glass and shared balconies facing straight onto the street, with nobody home during the day to draw a chain before the sun swings round. That's the brief on most of our Claremont call-outs — sunscreen or blockout on the exposed glass, motorisation wherever a body corporate makes a chain impractical, and a timber or aluminium venetian on anything still wearing its original sash windows.

  • Upper Claremont's Victorian and Edwardian sash windows, many pre-dating Cavendish Square (1972), fitted with slim venetians rather than a modern bracket forced onto old joinery
  • Mature street-tree canopy filters daytime light on the upper slopes, but a west-facing lounge still needs sunscreen or blockout for the late-afternoon sun
  • Motorised and app-controlled blinds specified wherever a body corporate or a hard-to-reach window near Main Road makes a chain impractical
  • Renovated Lower Claremont extensions fitted with concealed-recess or cellular systems for insulation an older, single-glazed home was never built with
How it works

From enquiry to fitted, in four steps

01

Enquire

Tell us the rooms, the products you're considering, and whether the house is a Victorian villa or an apartment near Main Road. The form takes two minutes, and so does the chat.

02

Free in-home measure

A consultant measures every opening on site, checks the window frames and fixing substrate, and brings fabric samples to see in your own light.

03

Written quote

Every window priced on its own line, with the lead time written in from the start — what you see quoted is what you pay.

04

Made & fitted

Every piece is manufactured to your measurements and installed cleanly by our own team, sash windows and body corporates handled with care.

On cost, before you ask: shading in this part of the southern suburbs works out at roughly R1,000–R7,500 the square metre once fitted, depending on the product and whether it runs on a motor. There is a minimum on small openings, and the figure for each of yours follows the free measure, in writing.

About this service

A made-to-measure service, described honestly

Claremont Blinds measures, makes and fits window shading for Claremont and the southern suburbs around it — Rondebosch, Newlands, Kenilworth and Tokai. Roller blinds, day-night blinds, timber and aluminium venetians and motorised systems are all manufactured to the measurements taken at your own windows, which is the only way to treat an original sash reveal and a modern apartment slider in the same house.

Every job follows the same route. You send the form or use the chat, and one of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to arrange a free in-home measure. At that visit each opening is measured, the frames and fixing substrate checked, and fabric, openness and control worked through room by room in your own light. A written quote comes back with every window itemised, and nothing is manufactured until you approve it. Then it is made to those sizes and installed by our own team, levelled, tested and demonstrated before they leave.

The details you send are used only to arrange that call-back and are handled under POPIA.

Questions

Before you enquire

Do you cover Rondebosch, Newlands, Kenilworth and Tokai as well as Claremont?

Yes — Claremont is our home ground, and we measure and fit right across the southern suburbs, including Rondebosch, Newlands, Kenilworth and Tokai. A bit further out than that, put it on the enquiry form and we will tell you straight.

My house still has its original sash windows — will a blind damage them?

Not if it's specified properly. We template each opening on site and choose face-fixed or reveal-mounted brackets depending on what the timber can take, rather than forcing a standard fitting onto period joinery. Timber venetians are usually the most sympathetic match for a Victorian sash window.

What suits an apartment near Main Road better — sunscreen or blockout?

Most living areas do well on sunscreen, which cuts glare while keeping some outlook over a busier street. Bedrooms usually want blockout, or a double roller that pairs both fabrics on one bracket. Where nobody's home to draw a chain, we'll usually suggest motorising it.

Are roller shutters the same as security shutters?

No. The roller shutters we fit are a shading product — external aluminium slats that roll down to control sun, heat, glare and light from outside the glass. They're not security-rated. If a property genuinely needs security-rated shutters, that's a different product, available on request.

Are your blinds safe for small children?

A tensioner goes on as standard wherever there is a cord or a chain. In a nursery or a child's room we usually steer you to wand-tilt, cordless or motorised operation instead; say so at the measure and your consultant prices it that way.

So what does the measure and quote come to?

Nothing. Not the measure, not the samples, not the consultation, not the written per-window quote — and no obligation to order at the end of it.
