Blinds & awnings for Kenilworth
Bordering Claremont on the Wynberg side, where a working racecourse's fynbos reserve sits behind streets of cast-iron Victorian cottages.
A racecourse with a fynbos reserve at its centre
Kenilworth Racecourse still runs as a working Thoroughbred track, and unusually for a built-up southern-suburbs address, its inner turf protects one of the last significant stands of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos anywhere — a critically endangered vegetation type. That open, low-rise land in the middle of the suburb means a number of nearby streets keep longer, more open sightlines than a typical tree-canopied Claremont side road, and see more direct sun through the day as a result.
Cast-iron verandahs and the front bay window
Established Victorian and Edwardian semi-detached cottages, many trimmed with ornate cast-iron "broekie lace" verandah work, line a number of Kenilworth's older streets, usually with a front bay window facing the road. A roller blind can sit heavily against that fine iron trim; a slim venetian blind tends to suit the proportions better, and the verandah itself is worth protecting with an awning rather than losing it as covered outdoor space.
One process, close enough to walk
Kenilworth sits close enough to Claremont that most measures happen on the same run as our Claremont and Rondebosch visits — a consultant measures every opening on site, checks whether the wall is shared with a neighbouring semi, and leaves a written, itemised quote before anything is ordered.
What we usually spec here
- Aluminium or timber venetians for front bay windows on cast-iron verandah cottages
- Sunscreen roller blinds for the more open sightlines near the racecourse reserve
- Folding-arm awnings kept slim enough to sit under existing iron verandah trim
- Motorisation for semi-detached homes sharing a wall and a fixing line with a neighbour
