A wine estate's forest at the back fence

Tokai Manor House, a Cape Dutch homestead dating to the late 1700s, anchors one of the Cape's oldest wine estates, and the pine plantation that grew up around it — Tokai Forest — is now part of Table Mountain National Park and a well-used spot for walking and mountain biking. A number of Tokai's family homes back directly onto that plantation or onto the neighbouring Constantia winelands, on stands noticeably larger than the older, tighter plots closer to Claremont's Main Road.

Bigger glass, bigger gardens, more to shade

Larger stands mean wider sliding doors and more garden to cover than a single window blind can manage — a folding-arm awning or a zip-screened outdoor room does more work here than it would on a compact Claremont townhouse plot. The forest edge cuts both ways: some elevations get genuine afternoon shade from mature trees, while others sit exposed to real wind funnelling down off the mountain, which matters for anything left extended outside. A sunscreen roller blind still carries the indoor work on the exposed elevations, and a slider that wide is far easier to live with on motorised operation than on a chain.
