Blinds & awnings for Rondebosch
A few minutes from Claremont, sharing the oak-lined avenues and Victorian verandah homes — but with Devil's Peak setting the light rather than Main Road's shopfronts.
Morning sun on the mountain side, all-day sun on the flats
Rondebosch's older houses sit on the western, mountain-facing slopes near UCT and Rhodes Memorial, where Devil's Peak throws afternoon shade but strong morning sun still lands on those deep Victorian verandahs. East of the railway line, toward the M5, the ground flattens out and opens up — houses there see longer, more direct sun through the day with no mountain to break it. Two different exposures on the same street plan, and the sunscreen-versus-blockout call on a roller blind usually comes down to which side of the tracks a house sits on.
Oak avenues, and the walls that run under them
Main Road and the streets around Campground and Belmont Roads carry some of the most established oak canopy in the southern suburbs, with low stone or brick walls and hedges fronting the older Victorian and Edwardian homes beneath them. Those deep verandahs are worth protecting as usable space, not just shading the windows behind them — a verandah-mounted roller or an awning keeps the space liveable through summer without losing it as an outdoor room the rest of the year. Where the original sash survives behind them, a timber venetian blind tilts the morning glare up off the room without giving up the garden.
One process either side of the railway line
Whether the house is a Cape Dutch-influenced villa near Groote Schuur Estate or a flatter mid-century home toward the Liesbeek River, the visit runs the same way — a consultant measures every opening on site, checks the fixing substrate on older stonework, and leaves you with a written, itemised quote before anything is ordered.
What we usually spec here
- Sunscreen roller blinds for verandah windows catching strong morning sun
- Blockout for bedrooms on the more exposed eastern flats
- Timber venetians sympathetic to Victorian and Edwardian sash windows
- Folding-arm awnings over deep verandahs and back patios
- Motorisation for hard-to-reach verandah or upper-storey glass
